Where the system ties you in
Why this has to be said out loud
Section titled “Why this has to be said out loud”The advantages of a system are easy to list. A decision is only sound if the price is visible too — and this system has a price on the independence side.
Where it genuinely ties you in
Section titled “Where it genuinely ties you in”The software is subscription-based and modular
Section titled “The software is subscription-based and modular”Steelwise is licence-based, on an annual arrangement. The engineering function and the BIM link are separately paid add-ons — so the claims that “the software also calculates” and “it exchanges with Revit” are not part of the base package. This is a predictable cost, but a recurring one, and the ability to design structures is tied to it.
The products change generations
Section titled “The products change generations”Steelwise replaced the earlier Structure and Detailer, and the manufacturer moves existing users across at licence renewal. Anyone maintaining older project material faces migration work — not a disaster, but something to plan for.
The machine takes its own format
Section titled “The machine takes its own format”FRAMECAD machine control expects RFY. That is not a problem in itself, but it means a program from another piece of software does not run on it directly: the machine and the design software come as a pair.
The knowledge is system-specific too
Section titled “The knowledge is system-specific too”The command set, the settings logic, the panel settings — this is learned knowledge. If only one person in an office can use it, that is a risk, and not a software risk but an operational one.
Where it does not tie you in
Section titled “Where it does not tie you in”The data can leave
Section titled “The data can leave”The machine program can be exported as CSV and XML, so the same design work can be issued to another production line. The model can be exported as IFC, drawings as PDF and other drawing formats, the material report as XLSX.
This is the decisive difference. A closed system is dangerous when the result of the work gets stuck inside. That is not the case here: projects can be moved, and the structure can be manufactured elsewhere.
The engineering rests on public standards
Section titled “The engineering rests on public standards”In Europe the software calculates to EN 1990, EN 1993-1-3 and EN 1998-1. These are public standards: the result can be checked with another tool at any time. This is not a closed, untraceable internal procedure.
How to live with it
Section titled “How to live with it”Buying a machine is not choosing software, it is choosing a production chain. Two things are worth settling in advance: who can use the software in the office or the plant, and in what form the company keeps its projects — if the archive holds IFC and CSV as well, not just project files, then the dependency is limited to daily work rather than to the company’s assets.
The point
Section titled “The point”The lock-in is real, but it should be seen for what it is: the daily tool is closed, the result of the work is not. In a technology decision that is the more important of the two.
